WOMEN’S MARCH DENOUNCES SENATE REPUBLICANS’ RADICAL NATIONAL ABORTION BAN BILL

Washington, D.C. — This week, Senator Lindsey Graham and Senate Republicans introduced a bill that would ban abortions after 15 weeks nationwide. This bill inaccurately qualifies 15 weeks with the non-medical term, “late term abortion”, and if passed, would criminalize abortion for both patients and the doctors who perform abortions. Women’s March Executive Director Rachel O’Leary Carmona issued the following statement in response:

“Republicans finally said the quiet part out loud and told us exactly what they would do if given the power: take away our rights. Women have been sounding the alarm on the threat to reproductive rights and now this bill is proof that Republicans are not going to stop until they ban abortion with no exceptions at all.

“The same people that said abortion should be left up to states are now doing mental gymnastics trying to explain this nationwide abortion ban. Even after voters in the deep red state of Kansas rejected a path to a statewide abortion ban last month, Republicans introduced this bill in the Senate because they aren’t interested in letting states, or women, have autonomy. They want total control and that starts with taking our fundamental rights away from us.

“But we won’t let that happen. Women have fought like hell all summer to ensure this doesn’t happen. All over the country, people are running on choice and they are WINNING. We will continue marching and protesting until every single person that can get pregnant has complete autonomy over their bodies.

“So join us from October 7-9 for a nationwide action to send a clear and non-negotiable message to anti-choice politicians: we won’t go back.”
