Women’s March Holds ‘Kick Out the Clowns’ Day of Action With Hundreds of Circus-Themed Events, Marches, and Protests in All 50 States

The Women’s March Flagship Direct Action Will Be Centered in Madison, Wisconsin

MADISON, WI – On Saturday, June 14th, as President Donald Trump storms his $45M military birthday parade through the nation’s capital, Women’s March members will hold “Kick Out the Clowns” events in all 50 states nationwide - with thousands of people converging for its central ‘Kick Out the Clowns’ direct action in Madison, Wisconsin.

The action will showcase the power of the people and “turn satire into resistance” – in contrast with Trump’s military spectacle in Washington, D.C – in Wisconsin, a state that has served as ground zero for some of the nation’s tightest federal races, two critical state Supreme Court battles, and a wave of high-stakes electoral fights ahead.

WHAT: ‘Kick Out the Clowns’ Women’s March Direct Action

WHERE: Library Mall, 715 State St, Madison, WI 53703

WHEN: Saturday, June 14, 12:00 - 2:00 PM CT

SPEAKERS:

Rachel O’Leary Carmona, Executive Director, Women’s March

Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera

Circus-themed actions will also take place in more than 350 cities in all 50 states, where activists will wear clown costumes in protest of what they call the Trump administration's "clown show fascism,” with the goal of setting a record for the most circuses held in a single day.

“Humor is important for our psyches — and to take fascists down a notch…Humor is key for morale and exposing the vulnerability of the strongman image,” writes Organizer and Strategist Daniel Hunter.

On a Women’s March mass call this month, Ivan Marovic, Executive Director of International Center on Nonviolent Conflict, said, “It’s not just fear that is the tool of authoritarianism, but also apathy. Through this combination, they manage to rule populations. And humor breaks both of them. It breaks apathy and allows people to [rise] up and get activated.”

“When you elect clowns, the country becomes a circus,” said Rachel O’Leary Carmona, Executive Director of Women’s March. “On June 14, while Trump throws himself a dictator-style birthday parade in D.C., we’ll be in the streets of Madison and across the country holding circuses that mirror the chaos the Trump administration has sown. Our grassroots circuses will expose the absurdity of the MAGA regime, a coalition of bullies and billionaires hellbent on stealing our freedoms. This isn’t a protest–it’s a nationwide intervention. We’re here to kick out the clowns, end the greatest shitshow on earth, and reclaim the big tent for democracy. This is where the ridiculous meets the resistance—and where the future is on the line.”

Women’s March and Women's March WIN have built a more-than-two-year campaign to build women’s political power in Wisconsin, including hosting two conferences in the state, centering its national #BiggerThanRoe day of action in Madison, WI, and endorsing Janet Protasiewicz and Susan Crawford in their state Supreme Court races – running a six-figure campaign in support of Protasiewicz that included paid ads, digital organizing, on-the-ground turnout efforts, and a GOTV operation.
