WOMEN’S MARCH STATEMENT ON LEAKED SCOTUS ABORTION DECISION Announces national rallies tomorrow (May 3)

In response to a leaked initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Alito that suggests that the Supreme Court plans to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Women’s March Executive Director Rachel O’Leary Carmona released the following statement:

“For years, women in this country have been warning about the end of abortion. That day has arrived.

“Tonight, we learned that at least five unelected and unaccountable Supreme Court justices decided they just don’t care about women, precedent, the Constitution, or about the institution they ostensibly serve.

“Tonight, the Supreme Court isn’t just on the wrong side of history—it’s on the wrong side of the present.

“This is a worst-case-scenario come to life. If and when this decision takes effect, the consequences will be unbearable—and for many women, lethal. That is no exaggeration. But it’s also no exaggeration to say that women will fight back like we always have. We won’t take this lying down. Tomorrow, from 8AM to 8PM at the steps of the Supreme Court, and at 5PM local time at federal courthouses, federal buildings, town halls, and town squares across the country, we’re showing up for abortion rights, saying bans off our bodies, and demanding that elected officials take action before the Court gets the chance to overturn abortion.

“In the coming days, weeks, and months, you’ll hear a lot of people say that the 2022 election is about abortion, and that’s true. But so will the 2024 election, and the 2026 election, and the 2028 election. Every state election, every congressional election, every presidential election, EVERY election, period, will be about abortion until our fundamental rights are restored, nationwide.”
